Joseph Foster Goode, Sr.

Founder

Joseph Foster Goode, Sr. was born to Robert and Louise Goode on November 5, 1903. Seeking out the opportunity to do better the family relocated to Montclair, New Jersey where they lived for many years. In 1955 with the help of his wife and son Joseph Founded the J.F. Goode Funeral Home in Amityville, New York which was a much needed service in the growing Black American community. Joseph Sr. served as manager and bookkeeper, dedicating 28 years of service until his passing in 1983. His legacy would continue on.


Anna M. Goode

Founder/Funeral Director

Anna M. Goode, Born April 11, 1902 in Brooklyn New York was the co-founder of the J.F. Goode Funeral Home. At the age of 85, Anna was the oldest active Funeral Director in the state of New York during her time. Anna attended the Maxwell’s Teaching College in Brooklyn, New York where she received her teaching degree. Anna remained a teacher for many, and then decided to go back to school and got her funeral directors license in 1972. Anna remained an active funeral director until her passing on March 21, 1988.


Joseph F. Goode, Jr.

Founder/Funeral Director

Along with his parents Joseph Sr. and Anna Goode co-founded J.F. Goode Funeral Home in 1955. Joseph Jr. served as the first licensed Funeral Director of the family-owned business until his demise in May, 1986 at which time his son, William R. Goode assumed full management responsibility along with administrative support from Anna and Joseph Jr.’s sister, Marcella LaGonterie.  Joseph Jr., a proud veteran of the U.S. Army served during the Korean War.  He received his mortician’s training under the renowned teacher Dr. Auguste Renouard, founder of the Renouard Training School for Embalmers and graduated in June, 1949. In 1968 Joseph Jr. was appointed by Governor Nelson Rockefeller as the first African-American to serve as Locality Mayor of Suffolk County. Given Joseph’s interest and commitment to civic issues that impacted the surrounding communities J. F. Goode Funeral Home serves, this role afforded him a platform in which to marshal added resources and bring attention/take action on the concerns of the community.


William R. Goode

Manager/Funeral Director

Bill, Manager of J.F. Goode Funeral Home has been a New York State Licensed Funeral Director since 1977, although he worked his first funeral when he was only 15 years old. As a graduate of Copiague High School, Bill went on to receive higher education at the State University of New York at Farmingdale where he received a degree in Applied Science with a focus on Mortuary Science. He is a member of the Nassau Suffolk Funeral Directors' Association. He served as an Airman in the U.S. Naval Reserves and is a retired MTA bus operator. Bill continues to serve his community with Dependability, Honesty and Reverence.

Diana E. Wilson

Funeral Director

Diana received her Funeral Directing License in 2005 at the age of 23, making her the youngest funeral director in the metropolitan and long island area at that time. She began working at the Funeral Home in 2004 and continues to help families in full capacity. Ms. Wilson is a member of the Nassau Suffolk Funeral Directors Association and is part of the Amityville Chamber of Commerce.

Deacon Alton E. Petteway

Assistant Funeral Director

Alton E. Petteway was born in 1932, He is a certified register nurse, licensed massage therapist and assistant funeral director.  Deacon Petteway has been with the J.F. Goode Funeral Home from the first day it opened its doors to the public and continues to be one of our most valued and beloved member of the team.
