Shawn Spaulding Obituary

Shawn Spaulding was born gloriously on July 6, 1968 at Good Samaritan Hospital to his loving parents, Mack and Catherine Spaulding. The Spauldings brought their newborn, Shawn, to his lifelong home at 70 Putnam Avenue in North Babylon, Long Island. Shawn’s arrival in this world was to the full delight of his older brother, Kenny, and his large extended family down the road, in Amityville.

Much of his early years were spent not only at 70 Putnam, but also at 42 Dunbar Street in Amityville, the house of his grandparents, Simon and Maude Walker. It was Shawn’s second home. At Pop and Maude’s house, Shawn had an overflow of love and good times with his grandparents, his parents, aunts, uncles and dozens of cousins. Growing up, Shawn was well-spirited and got along fantastically with his cousins.

Shawn attended school in the North Babylon School District. He was a graduate of North Babylon High School. If you know the Spauldings, you know that Shawn grew up in a house of hard-working parents and he had first-rate examples of what it means to live life by a strong work ethic. Shawn loved cooking and had training in culinary arts at a vocational school. Shawn’s parents had hoped that Shawn would pursue a solid career in cooking, but that was not to be Shawn’s path in this life. Shawn was a freer spirit.

For work, Shawn did landscaping and all-around light handyman work, being employed pretty regularly by customers in the neighboring areas. Upon hearing of Shawn’s recent passing, several of his customers have commented on how much they are going to miss him and his pleasant demeanor. He was very neighborly. Folks liked Shawn. He was funny, with a good sense of humor. He had a magnificent smile. He had a core group of friends who thought the world of him. Some of them were lifelong friends, spanning back to elementary school. In reflection, they speak glowingly of their friend and very well of Shawn’s parents, who they recognize as always having been invaluable pillars of support and always having been in Shawn’s corner. If his father, Mack, had a dollar for every time he tried to get Shawn a job with some benefits, Mack would be rich!

Shawn suffered a heart attack while working and, a day later, at Good Samaritan Hospital, he passed away peacefully. He leaves behind his loving parents; his brother, Kenny; his sister-in-law, Alayne; his nephew, Kevin; his niece, Nicole; his aunts, Bernita Winfrey, Leslie Freeman, Louise Griffin, Linda Walker, Veronica Adams, Vivian Walker, Nancy Walker, Brenda Wallace Patricia Adams, and Helen Tate; his uncles, Roosevelt Winfrey, Jake Spaulding, David Freeman, Merritt Spaulding, Rufus Peters, Ronald Adams, Lamar Walker, Victor Walker, Terry Walker, Louis Hertzog, Anthony Walker and Curtis Walker and a host of cousins, other loving relatives, and friends.
