Obituary
Deaconess Rise Lee Walters, the only child of the late Ernest Gasaway and the late Jane Griffin-Davis was born on January 28th, 1934 in Snow Hill, Alabama. At an early age, Rise moved with her Grandmother Mattie Pride, to Pensacola, Florida while her Mother moved to Brooklyn, New York with her cousin, the late Juanita Colbert, to work. Rose remained in Pensacola until her Grandmother’s passing in 1947, at which time Rose also moved to Brooklyn, New York, joining her Mother and Cousin.
Rose completed her Primary Education in Brooklyn, and spent most summers in Amityville, New York with her Uncle, the late Edgar Griffin (proprietor of Griffin Taxi Service).
Over the years while visiting Amityville, Rose met and made friends with many people, one being Betty Hazel Bean. In May of 1955 Mrs. Bean introduced Rose to Paul A. Walters, who had recently returned to Amityville from the Korean War. That introduction must have been Orchestrated By GOD because just 3 months later, Paul and Rose were Married, and remained Married for 52 Years until Paul’s passing in September, 2007.
From this union three children were born, Paul Augustus Jr., Debra Ann., and Douglas Alan.
After being a Stay-at-Home Mother until the late 1960s, Rose completed The Lora Robinson School for Cosmetology in Hempstead, New York. She became a Beautician, and practiced her craft for over 40 years before Retiring.
Over their years together, Paul and Rose went on vacations every single year, going to several Islands and on Cruises. Their favorite destination was Hawaii, where they visited three times!!
Rose was a very active member of her church, Hollywood Full Gospel Baptist Cathedral. She was Married by and became a member there under the Pastorate of Reverend Rogers, became a Deaconess under the Pastorate of Rev. Dr. Andy C. Lewter Sr. and was mentored by Mother Lillian Aaron.
Rose became a member of Hollywood Baptist Church Choir in 1960, The Floral Club, and Rose Faithfully set up The Lord’s Supper EVERY MONTH for First Sunday for many years.
Rose was also a Liftime Member of The American Legion Hunters-Squires-Jackson Post 1218 Women’s Auxilliary Services, and The Order of the Eastern Star.
Rose’s favorite hobbies were Power Walking and Event Planning.
