In Loving Memory
of
Margaret Kimbrough
Margaret Kimbrough, daughter of the late Alonzo and Ester Gordon Fair was born on September 7th, 1920, in Due West, South Carolina. She attended public school in Abbeville County and graduated from Dixie High School with honors.
Like many African-Americans living in the South during the Great Depression, Margaret made her way north during what is known as the Great Migration; settling in Long Island, New York during the late 1940s. Even though she had relocated to an entirely different region of the country, Margaret’s love of cooking which was honed in her beloved South Carolina, did not wane in New York. Regularly, she would cook hearty Sunday meals for her family featuring her signature ‘baked sweet potatoes’ - undeniably her grandchildren’s favorite dish. She also enjoyed various genres of music. She attended Shiloh Baptist Church, in Rockville Centre, New York, where she was a member of the Senior Choir and served annually on the Women’s Day Committee. In later years, she became a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wyandanch, New York where many family members worshipped.
She was preceded in death by her husband John W. Kimbrough, her sons, James and Samuel Fair, two sisters, Florence Valentine and Edna Hasben, and her brothers, Alonzo and Gordon Fair.
Margaret enjoyed spending time with her loving family and leaves to cherish and carry on her legacy, a Daughter Deborah (Philip) Kimbrough-Lowe; Daughter-in-law Mary Lois Fair; grandchildren: Valerie Fair-Mickel, Michelle Fair-Smith, Milagros (Alfred) Fair-Smith, Sonya (Wayne) Fair-Lawrence, Samuel (Marie) Fair II, Jami (Greg) Fair-Davis, and Jordan Lowe; thirteen great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece Dr. Saundra (Rev. Samuel) Glover, nephews Frederick (Kim) Hasben and Reagan (Gwendolyn) Fair; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
