Leonard Frederico Canton Jr. was born May 7, 1942, in Manhattan, NY. Leonard was the 1st of 3 children born to Leonard F. Canton, Sr. (1921 - 2015) and Geneva M. Donadelle (Canton) ( 1922 - 1976). Leonard F. Canton, Jr., known affectionately to all as Lenny, attended PS (Public School) 184 in Harlem from 1948 - 1951. Later moving with his family to North Amityville where he attended Copiague UFSD (Union Free School District).

In high school Lenny was a gifted athlete, playing 3 varsity sports: football, basketball and track & field, where he excelled in the long jump, the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes, and relays. For three years, he was Suffolk County’s 100 Yard Dash Champion and anchored several Championship 800 and 1600 Yard (Mile) Relay Teams during that time.

Upon graduation from high school, Lenny attended Morgan State College (now University) in Baltimore, Maryland on a track and field scholarship. It was there that Lenny met and married Mary Ellen Salley of Baltimore in 1964. That union produced 2 wonderful daughters: Chamein and Natalie.

A natural accountant he opened the doors to the Canton Accounting and Tax Services, in 1982. His clients never hesitated to call him on the phone, at any time, to ask his advice on finances, business opportunities, love-life, child-rearing, education, and any and everything that they felt that their tax man could help them with. He was "That Family Member who has All the Answers."

Lenny, a lifetime resident of Amityville, was fondly referred to as the “unofficial” Mayor of Amityville and No. Amityville. He was a founding board member and longtime Chair of North Amityville Community Economic Center (NACEC) and served as an elected Committeeman for the Suffolk County Democratic Party representing N. Amityville, In his later years, Lenny enjoyed traveling, playing tennis and golf, and engaging in civic or sports discussions with his many friends.

Lenny is survived by his daughters Chamein and Natalie, twin brothers, Calvin and Cecil, sisters Paula and Jennifer, sisters -in law, Carol and Lynn, son-in-law Roger Donell Sherman, his grandsons Sean, Scott, Caleb and Evan and nieces and nephews Jackie, Jeffrey, Kendra, Karen, Terrence, Jahaila, Haile, Malik, Tatyana and Obeji. He also leaves behind his aunt, Rita (Donadelle) Wright and a host of cousins, friends and acquaintances in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, West Indies and Ghana, West Africa.
