Jonathan Hawes

Obituary

Jonathan Hawes was born August 9, 1951 in Norfolk, VA, the second son of Wilbert L. Hawes, Sr. and Betty L. Daniels. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Brooklyn, NY. At age 11 he and his family moved to Amityville, Long Island, NY with his older brother Wilbert L. Hawes, Jr. and sister Brenda C. McNeil and Veronica H. Jones. Jonathan attended Mill Lane Jr. High in Farmingdale NY then Farmingdale Sr. High School. He graduated from Farmingdale Sr. High School in 1969. His fascination with aeronautics persuaded him to enroll in aviation classes at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY, In 1973 Jonathan began working at the Municipal Building, 1 Centre St., NYC. He worked for 40 years as a Finance Clerk. After retirement Jonathan joined the Knights of Columbus and attained 3rd Degree membership; Council No. 6556.

Jonathan loved all things Egyptian. He obtained his passport in 2013 and was making plans to travel to Egypt; but it was not meant to be. Jonathan had many friends. Friends would offer frequent flyer miles so he could visit his mother and sister who once lived in Texas. Johnny, as we affectionately called him, loved the ocean and took frequent trips to Atlantic City. Boat shows, car shows or B52’s out of Republic Airport, were hobbies that Johnny pursued with a passion. He loved people. He also had a giving heart. Never would Johnny say, “No” if you asked for anything. He was fun to be with. We will miss his friendly spirit tremendously.

There’s an old saying, “To have friends, you have to be a friend”. Johnny had many friends and family that loved him very much.  Johnny will be missed, but we know he is with God now.
