John Gilbert Patton Sr. was born June 10, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the 5th of 12 children born to the late Henry Patton Sr. and Eleanor Coffee. He was a talented youth, who could draw very well and he also learned to play the drums in school and read drum music.
He attended Boys High School in Brooklyn, where he studied drafting and served on the library staff. He received a Medal for Service upon graduation. He was an active member of The Boy Scouts of America where he achieved the Senior Scout honor.
John served in the Army as a cook. He was stationed at Red River Ordinance in Texas with Top Secret Clearance. After an honorable discharge, he worked in the meat industry around Brooklyn as a butcher and became very well known in the community. He later joined with his younger brother, Clarence, in the electrical construction business and worked for 19 years as a warehouse man and electrician.
John was always a very sharp dresser and brown was his favorite color. As a young man he enjoyed lifting weights, building box scooters, playing handball, taking photographs, and walking to Sheeps Head Bay with his buddies to go crabbing. As an adult, he enjoyed deep sea fishing and had a large collection of fishing rods and reels with all different kinds of hooks and tackles. He made his own flies and could probably open his own store with his many supplies. He was an officer of the Atlantis Anglers Association.
At a young age, John accepted Christ at Holy Trinity Baptist Church. As an adult, he was active in the Christian Life Center Church on Long Island and served as a Deacon. He also served in the food pantry ministry.
John was married twice. His first wife is Barbara Jackson and from this union they had two children, son John Jr. and daughter Robyn.
His second wife Sheila Labad had three children, Troy, Tracy, and Kevin. She shared his love of fishing, and they spent many years together taking fishing trips. Sheila preceded him in death.
John leaves to mourn John Jr., Robyn and son-in-law Arnold Watson; 4 grandchildren-Christopher, Alex, Brittany Rose, and Maya; 3 brothers-Benjamin, Lorenzo, and Clarence and sister-in law Blanche; 2 sisters-Eleanor and Loretta and brother in-law Roy Greenidge; many nieces and nephews; a host of relatives and friends.
