Hazel Vines Obituary

Hazel Mae Vines

On July the 18th of the year 1920 at Wilson County Hospital in Wilson North Carolina a precious gem was born to the late Frank Ward and Minnie Harris. Who would have thought that Hazel Mae Vines also known as Mama but better known to the family as Granny would touch so many lives during her 96 years on this Earth.

Granny attended Darden High where she met the late Jack Vines. Soon after meeting, the two were married. After her marriage Granny took on the role of homemaker where she loved each and every moment of cooking her favorite, beans, bones and collard greens and also waking up at the crack of dawn to clean the whole house with her music playing. Soon after marriage, four children came from this union, Lillie, Pearl, Patrica, and Romaine. After her daughters were born she took on the extraordinary role of Mama. And that's where her real journey began.

Soon after their girls were born Jack and Hazel picked up and moved to New York, where she continued her journey as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always giving her love, wisdom and guidance. Her joys were God first, her family and of course the love of music and dancing.

Granny is survived by her daughters Lillie Burkes, whom she resided with when she was called home, Pearl Hughes and Romaine Chandler. She is also survived by four generations of grandchildren in which whom there are way too many to name.

Granny is predeceased by her daughter Patrica Gillard , her three sisters Lucile Thomas, Estelle Barns, Minnie Belle-Sims, and also five brothers, Frank, David, Pete, Zino, Albert and Columbus Ward.

Granny would like to let you know that her work here is done. She had received a call on May 27th early in the morning, a call where an offer was presented to her that she could not refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with her family and friends she has not seen in a long time and where job security is exactly 110 percent. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, dancing and cooking beans, bones, collard greens and corn bread till her heart is content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. She left instructions for her daughters, grand children and great grand children to celebrate her mission here which has now been completed. Low adherence to these instructions will not be tolerated.

Now please raise your glasses and spit for the late great Hazel Mae Vines.
