Harold “Junior” Benjamin Risher
September 23, 1934 – June 26, 2018
Harold “Junior” Benjamin Risher was born September 23, 1934 in Erhardt, South Carolina. He was the eldest son of seven (David, Sidney, Cecil, Shirley, Lena, and Michael) children born to Blease and Ada Risher, whom preceded him in death. Early Tuesday morning June 26, 2018 in Long Island, NY he was called home to be with our heavenly father and to be reunited with his parents and two siblings David and Michael.
In his early years he was christened at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church of Erhardt, South Carolina where he and his parents were faithful members. Junior attended Oak Grove Elementary School in Erhardt, South Carolina which he graduated from with an 8th grade education. Shortly after he proceeded to work at various industrial companies helping to provide for the family. Junior had always been a strong, hardworking, diligent, responsible, and loving person.
In his late teenage years a child was born unto him affectionately known as “Speedy” who preceded him in death at the tender age of six years old and he dearly missed. Not too long after Speedy’s passing Junior moved to Brooklyn, NY to get a fresh start.
He settled in Brooklyn for some time and worked as a Forman for a tricycle company. A few years later he worked as a security guard at Fairchild Engine & Airplane Manufacturing Company (later known as Grumman Aircraft Engineering) until he retired in the late 1980’s.
During the late 1960’s he met Florence Douglas who had six children (Johnny, Marjorie, Ernestine, Freddy, Garry, and Wayne) they had a relationship for several years and then married August 16, 1973 in Erhardt, South Carolina. Junior became a loving Step-father to Florence’s children. He was a supportive and a loving husband to Florence, a role model and father figure to her children who also thought and viewed him as the same. He’d participate in their sports activities and in many family gatherings. Junior was affectionately called “Dad” by his step-children and “Grandpa” by his step-grandchildren and was loved as family.
He had a loving spirit, he loved to laugh and be around family and friends who he enjoyed playing card games with on the weekends, he enjoyed eating lasagna and soul food prepared by loving grand-daughter Danielle Aiken. He longed for road trips with his loving grand-son Steven Dukes to visit family in Erhardt, South Carolina every year. No matter how old any of us were, we were
always his baby. He’d kindly say, “Thank you, baby” or “I love you too, baby”. Grandpa will truly be missed.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife Florence Risher, his step-children, John Dukes, Marjorie Dukes, Ernestine Young, Frederick (Terry) Wofford, Wayne (Denise) Wofford, Garry (Gwen) Wofford, 18 grand-children, 35 great-grand children, and 4 great great-grandchildren. His loving siblings Sidney (Audry) Risher, Shirley R. Gordon, Lena (Lennon) Folk, Cecil (Pearl) Risher, and daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn Risher and a host of nieces and nephews.
