Eucelin Baker Obituary

Eucelin Monica Reid Baker was born on November 12th, 1922 in Riversdale, St. Catherine Parish, Jamaica W.I., to the late Thomas & Mabel Reid. She was born the fifth of their eight children and went home to be with the Lord on May 5th, 2021.

Eucelin was the last of her generation. Her siblings, David, Kenneth, Altamont, Wilhelmina, Pearl, Winifred, Osrail, all preceded her in death.

As a child, Eucelin attended Mount Hermon Primary School in, Riversdale. It was there where Eucelin matured into the person we all came to know and love. While in Jamaica, Eucelin worked many jobs. Her most notable occupation was that of a cook at a restaurant in Kingston. Eucelin had a love for authentic Jamaica cuisine and shared her recipes and delicious meals with everyone.

Eucelin was reared in a Christian home and received the Lord at an early age. Her mother was an Evangelist and had a church built so that family, friends and neighbors could come and worship the Lord. As Eucelin grew into an adult, she would then join the Mount Olivet A.M.E. Church in Riversdale. On February 26th, 1963, Eucelin immigrated to the United States with her young son. Some years later she would be granted her citizenship.

Eucelin was employed as a Dietary Aide at Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, NY, where she retired after nearly 30 years of service. While employed at Brunswick, Eucelin befriended many who she kept in contact with until the end.

In the 1970s, Eucelin joined Shaw Temple A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of the late Rev. William J. Smith. Eucelin was an active member and served on the Usher Board & Kitchen Committee for many, many years. On September 20th, 2009, Eucelin was appointed Church Mother by The Rev. Dr. David I. Robinson, Sr., she was then affectionately known by the members as “Mother Baker”.

Eucelin was a family person and was the distinguished matriarch of the Reid Family. She kept in contact with her abundance of nieces, nephews and cousins residing in the U.S., Jamaica, the U.K. and Canada.

Her love of life and sweet spirit will forever be embraced and cherished by those who loved her, especially her beloved son, Winston A. Baker Sr (Karen).; grandchildren, Winston A.
