Derek P. Hatcher Obituary

Obituary

Derek Paul Hatcher, Sr. was born to Luther “Buddy” and Marie Hatcher on April 18, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York. Derek, their only son, was the youngest of their four children. His older sisters Barbara Hatcher, Joanne Johnson, and Sharon Johnson preceded him in death.

Derek married the love of his life, Dereth Granger on November 8, 1974, and they began their family living in Bay Shore, Long Island. Derek Hatcher was a wonderful husband, and a great father to his children.  He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His nieces and nephews adored him too, because he was always there for them. He was also a mentor, and supporter to numerous neighborhood children. He was full of love, highly opinionated, straight forward, unfiltered, a storyteller, and a funny man. He loved those whom he loved with an open heart, an open mind, and an open hand. He was kind.

Before he retired he worked in New York City for over 30 years for MTA, as a bus operator out of the Fresh Pond depot, just as his father-in-law, Arthur had done. He was a proud member of Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100.

On November 1, 2020, Derek slipped away from those that loved him most, joining his beloved son Derek, Jr, (Dinky) in heaven.

He leaves to cherish his love and memory, Dereth, his wife of 48 years, his son Drew, daughters Erica, Danielle and son-in-law Joseph Ringgold. Derek and Dereth’s  six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Additionally, his brothers and sisters- in-law, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Also, he was loved and will be sorely missed by a host of extended family members and dear friends throughout the country.
