Dawn was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 4, 1964 to Marvin and Marion Lewis. She was the fourth of four children.
Dawn lived in Lakeview for almost all of her life and after graduating from Malverne High School, she attended Clarion University. At Clarion she was a member of the track and field team and graduated with her bachelor’s degree. Driven by her passion for advocating for children and families needing support, she devoted her life’s work to social services. She spent most of her career with Mercy First and ultimately served at Sheltering Arms as Chief Operating Officer before leaving suddenly in 2020 due to illness. Dawn was also a member of the Love Oasis Christian Center in Queens, NY.
With her kind heart, positive spirit, and sense of humor, Dawn has touched many lives with her smile, laughter, loving guidance, and generosity. We’re going to miss her dearly. She is survived by her son Joseph; her three grandchildren Aliyah, Joseph Jr., and Mikaela, with their mother Geanette Douglas; her brother Charles (Chuck) and wife Ruth; her sister Barbara and husband Darryl; her brother Marvin (Barry) and wife Rhonda; her aunt Betty Henderson; her godmother Wilhelmina Funderburke; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in her honor to MercyFirst at mercyfirst.org or by mail to MercyFirst Development Dept., 525 Convent Rd., Syosset, NY 11791.
