Obituary
David was born on December 27th, 1954 to Alzena and George Horne, in Camden, New Jersey. His family moved to Roslyn, New York. He received his formal education at Roslyn High School; where he received the nickname “Honey D”. He played basketball and was a star player on the football team. David graduated in 1973 and moved on to Adelphi University. Not only did he enjoy sports, but he was also very social. He loved to eat and loved to dance; he was always the life of the party. In fact, whenever he went to a wedding reception and noticed an empty seat or a missing guest, he would order a dinner as if it were for the other person, but really have an extra dinner for himself. He was always a jokester and always outgoing.
David confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He became a devoted member of Massapequa Tabernacle, where he met his future wife, Rita Avant. The story goes that they met at a church picnic in 1979; she fell while roller skating and David helped her up….the ongoing joke is he et her when she was “down and out”. They married in 1980, and began what would be a fun loving 37 year marriage. The family resided in Rosedale, Queens to later move out to Suffolk County, Long Island. They have three daughters, Chanel, Crystal and Cheryl. Prior to the establishment of the Bread of Life Fellowship Church, David supported Bishop Randy and Pastor Gayle’s vision to reach the lost at all cost. He was soon ordained as a deacon.
He worked for the New York Times newspaper distributing company and later applied for the New York Police Department. Once he completed his training at the Police Academy, in 1984. David became a NYPD Police Officer for the Transit Authority Bureau; he spent ten years on the job. His early retirement allowed him the opportunity to help and look after many of the elderly, sick and shut-in members of the church. David drove them to doctor’s appointments, helped with grocery shopping and offered prayer and communication to those in need. He remained active with his family and friends.
In 2004, due to health issues, David spent the rest of his days in a nursing and rehabilitation facility. After a long fight with his health, he went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 15th 2018. He would be very proud of all three of his girls; Chanel and Cheryl, who are teachers; and Crystal, who followed in his footsteps as a NYPD Police Officer.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and older brother. He leaves behind his wife, Three daughters, twin grandsons, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was a loving husband, dedicated father and valued member of his church and community.
