Obituary

On Friday, November 2st, 2019, Conrad Martin Jr., a devoted partner, loving father, doting grandfather and revered man of the community, passed away at the age of 67.

Born to Conrad Alexander Martin Sr. and Doris Elizabeth Martin on July 27, 1952, Conrad Alexander Martin Jr., known under the sobriquet Alex to his close friends, was a marvel to anyone he met. He conquered every academic stage with ease including acceptance into the prestigious, specialized Stuyvesant High School where he was one of two African American students in his graduating class. He was so gifted, he started college at the age of 16 after being promoted several grades between elementary school and junior high school. Due to his precocious matriculation, he was unable to attend the college of his choice, Howard University, as his parents thought he was too young to be away from home. After attaining a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Philosophy from Brooklyn College, he followed in his fathers footsteps and was employed by the New York State Unified Court System.

During his esteemed and venerated tenure, beginning as an officer of the court, through multiple promotions, he ultimately ascended to First Deputy Chief Clerk for the New York State Supreme Court until he retired after 37 years of service in November 2010. Connie, as called by his colleagues and associates was known to be firm but fair and was respected by many. He attached excellence to everything he touched and was the recipient of the Botein Medal- and honor bestowed upon individuals for outstanding contributions to the administration of the courts. He did hot suffer fools gladly and did not hesitate to let his expectations be known. His quick wit, debonair demeanor, professionalism, and most notably, overwhelming brilliance forged many life long friendships. To know “Connie” was to know excellence

Throughput his retirement, he spent his time doing things he loved. He had a fervor for knowledge and a zeal for reading. He completed anagrams and New York Times crossword puzzles effortlessly and could answer virtually any Jeopardy question instinctively. He enjoyed fine dining and prided himself on his own culinary masterpieces. He entertained his loved ones and it would be remiss not to state that he enjoyed a well made cocktail . He enjoyed the tranquil and rhythmic sounds of smooth jazz and annually attended jazz concerts and festivals with his friends

Forever adventurous, retirement afforded him the opportunity to explore additional recreational activities such as golfing, Pilates and personal training. His DVR was full of entertaining and thought provoking television programs (one of his recent favorites beings Game of Thrones) and his adroit use of words were used to encourage those around him to elevate their vocabulary. Alex was also quite comical- he’d find humor in any situation and would often say, “life is funnier than anything you could make up.” He was an avid swimmer, a Broadway enthusiast, a fastidious groomer (he loved spa days and mani/pedi’s) but also, so much more. Beyond him being a repository of useless information as he so referred to himself, Conrad was a tremendously sentimental, gentle, adoring and inspiring man that we will miss immensely. Just like his father, it is an honor and a privilege to celebrate him and his life.
