Obituary

Betty Barbara Frisby

Betty Barbara Frisby affectionately known as "Nan" was born January 5, 1931 to her parents Oscar Jackson and Florence Frazier in Copiague, New York. She had four brothers and five sisters.

Betty attended Copiague schools, but at an early age she entered the workforce to help support her family. She was a housekeeper to many local families throughout Amityville and worked as a presser at Fiesta Cleaners. She was employed by Grumman Corporation, assembling circuit boards and later became a nurse's aide at Our Lady of Consolation.

Throughout her years, Betty was married twice. She met and married her childhood friend the late Thomas L. Walters and later married the late William E. Frisby, Sr. From these unions she had ten children. William and Betty made their home in Bay Shore, New York. Betty became a member of Grace Community Church in Amityville, where she served on the Missionary Board, Usher Board and the Willing Workers. In 2001, Grace honored her as "Mother of the Year."

Nan was a mother to many, besides raising ten children of her own, she was a foster mother and helped raise many of her nieces and nephews and if that wasn't enough she was "mom" to all the neighborhood children. The doors of her home were always open and it was a place where you always felt comfortable. She believed that cleanliness was next to godliness, "It was so clean; you could eat off the floors." You can ask any one of her ten children about Saturday morning chores day. No Soul Train until chores were done!

Betty lived life to the fullest; she was a Majorette for the North Amityville Music Makers Drum and Bugle Corp. Along with other family members, she helped coordinate gatherings such as Amityville Day where she regularly had a stand selling dinners, bus trips to Danbury Fair, and the Fathers's Day outing at Heckscher State Park that continues today. In addition, she enjoyed traveling with family and friends. Betty was devoted to her gardening and taking care of her indoor plants. She was known for her extravagant holiday decorating that was featured in Long Island Newsday. Betty found pleasure in fishing and crabbing with her husband and children; she was known to pack the kids in the station wagon with a gourmet lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Kool-Aid, and cookies to spend all night= at the Babylon or Amityville dock. She found joy in cooking and entertaining for family and friends at her home. Nan's ultimate passion was caring for her grandchildren, they were the apple of her eye. Her love for music and children was never lost by her battle with Alzheimer's. Nan's wisdom and life lessons continue to live on within all of us.

She leaves to cherish her memories one sister, ten children, thirty-six grand children, fifty-five great grandchildren, two godchildren and a host of family and friends.
