In loving Memory
of
Robert J. Smith
Robert James Smith was born in Gallion, Alabama on January 23, 1943 to the late Paul and Beatrice Smith. He was the third of nine children, three of which have preceded him in death. At an early age, Robert accepted Christ in his life at Mt. Cannon Baptist Church in Demopolis, Alabama. After attending Thompson High School in Alabaster, Alabama, he entered the United States Army. He served three years and then received an Honorable Discharge. Robert later moved to New York where he met and married Carrie Bowman and joined St. John’s Baptist Church in Copiague.
Robert loved to drive across country in his big rig and enjoyed it up until his health began to fail. He was a man who loved to keep busy. When he wasn’t working on things around the house, he started working security. Robert later rededicated his life to Christ. During his membership at St. John’s, he faithfully served on the Usher Board, Food Pantry, the Outreach Ministry and Vacation Bible School and enjoyed each one. He loved setting a positive example and making others laugh and smile, on Sundays before morning worship service, he would often tie the young men’s ties. During the week he would attend North Amityville Senior Center where he was beyond loved and cherished. Robert was known as “Pop Pop”, “Old Dude”, “Roberto”, and “Bug”. Did you know that he also used to collect Hess Trucks?
On October 20, 2018 at 10:00pm, Robert was called home to be with the Lord. He fought a good fight of faith and we will miss him dearly, but we rejoice in his homegoing. He will forever be remembered by his devoted wife, his loving children, two brothers, three sisters, one sister-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, close friends and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
