Portrait of a Holy and Beautiful Life
Mother Margie Nell Harrell
Like the beautiful orchid flower so brilliant and radiant, so exemplifies the existence of such a women named MARGIE NELL HARRELL. In the quiet town in Jacksonville Georgia, Margie Nell was born to the late Frank and Evelina Harrell. The date was June 16, 1940. Margie was the youngest of eleven siblings, eight of whom precede her in death. She was called to her final rest on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Sayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sayville, New York. Her demise follows a life of total commitment, devotion and dedication to God and her family.
Margie’s educational training was through the Rockhill School System where she graduated from Rockhill High School. Her early religious affiliation was at the Salem Baptist Church. Her sister Lillie came to NY in 1962 and Margie, along with her first cousin, Lena Smith, came together in 1963. Margie and Lena settled in Merrick NY. This was due to Mother Harrell and Mother Smith having Domestic Live In Jobs.
Consequently, this is how they came to unite with the Church of God in Christ Little Zion. Her sister Lillie was already residing in New York-One sister and two brothers migrated to Florida and the rest of the siblings stayed and resided in Georgia.
Subsequent to Lena’s arrival in New York, Margie and Lena moved East to Bay Shore, followed by a move to Brentwood, and finally a permanent move to Central Islip, New York. After a season of domestic employment, Margie enjoyed a thriving career with GEM Electronics until her long-awaited and well-earned retirement.
Under the pastorate of Elder White, Margie was very active and highly instrumental in building the work at Little Zion up to, including and well into the years of Elder White’s ultimate consecration to the Bishopric and Prelacy.
Ever faithful, Mother Harrell worked diligently in the scope of Little Zion’s manifold growth and expansion of ministries, especially the Sunday School Department, Usher Board and the Culinary Department-a ministry which showcased her passion, gift and love for cooking! Mother Harrell and Mother Smith ruled the Kitchen!!!
It was an unfailing trait to behold and admire how sincerely Mother Harrell loved Bishop & Mrs. White, their children and the entire White Family. In fact, their family’s early recollections of Mother Harrell and preciously reflective of the years she and Mother Smith would visit Bishop’s home in Amityville to pick up Bishop Frank Anthone and Sherri and bring them to Sunday School.
As their Sunday School teacher, Mother Harrell shall always be remembered as having planted the formative seeds of the Word of God into our Pastor & Bishop, and Sister Sherri-Psalms 23 being one of her lifelong favorite scriptures.
An avid reader, traveler and skilled cook, Mother Harrell loved Gospel music! One of her favorite singers and songs was Luther Bonds and “It’s Your Time” along with Shirley Caesar and Candy Staton. Another of Mother Harrell’s favorite pastimes was walking the Mall just to window shop.
Still, whenever she returned to Georgia, she would always bring her family gifts. Her niece Diedra recalls a visit when she complimented Aunt Margie on her shoes, expressing that they were “beautiful” only to discover when Mother Harrell left her niece’s house, she looked around and saw that her Aunt had left her the shoes! This is who Mother Harrell was! Precious. Kind. Thoughtful. Loving. Generous. Giving and prayerful.
Always endearing, Margie was very active with her family, neighbors and friends-You would often see her driving her nieces to and from school. Every Saturday she would go to Nursing homes and visit the sick. She could be counted on to drive friends or neighbors to an appointment or run errands to the store.
Mother Margie N. Harrell leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters, Theresa Clark of Jacksonville, Georgia and Lillie P. Jackson of Douglas, Georgia; a Sister-In-Law, Laura Harrell Spoony, along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, her beloved Pastor, Bishop Frank Anthone White, Dr. Juliet White and the entire Church Family of Zion Cathedral.
