Janice Lavern Carey was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.  June 25th, 1945 at St. Joseph Hospital to the proud parents of Chester Abe Godwin and Helen Godwin.

 

Janice attended school in Brooklyn, N.Y. before her family relocated to Wyandanch, NY where they would make this their permanent home. Janice was always a social butterfly and friends with everyone she met. While she attended Middle School, she met her good friends and sisters Yvonne Phinizy, Patricia Grant, Margie Johnson and Ann Fisher, as well as the love of her life Robert George Carey. While in school Janice had a nick name “Jitta” that everyone preferred to call her.

 

 In 1964 Janice graduated from Wyandanch Memorial High School and went on to become a CAN at Central General Hospital. While at Central General Janice married her high school sweetheart Robert George Carey in June of 1965. Two beautiful children came from this union Kim Carey and Gina Carey. Janice worked at Central General Hospital for 10 years before going to Cornell Corporation Extension in 1974.

 

While at Cornell Janice taught nutrition education. She met and became sisters with Christine Kimble. Janice was always looking for ways to further her education and her career. In 1984 Her and Christine attended SUNY Old Westbury University together to pursue business management. After Cornell Janice went on to work at Citi Corp retail services where she met JoAnne Roman who looked up to her as a mother figure. Janice stayed at Citi Corp for 15 years before retiring. After retiring from Citi Corp Janice went on to work at Darby Drug Company for a few years where she met and became close friends with Andrea Alves.

After Darby Medical Janice went onto the Town of Babylon Senior Citizen Nutrition Center. While at Wyandanch Senior Center Janice met and became very good friends with Lucinda Pierre and Tina Beard-Hendricks. Janice loved working at the center she was able to call bingo, play cards and play dominoes. Every night before bed Janice would have girl talk with her two best friends who were more like sisters Yvonne Phinizy and Lucinda Pierre. Everyone who met Janice always loved her. She embraced everyone with love and Kindness and wasn’t afraid to tell you what she thought. Janice “Jitta” touched many lives. Everyone will truly miss her and seeing her “Nana mean machine” coming down the road with her behind the wheel.

 

Janice was a faithful church member of Revelation Church of God in Christ. She was also a Sunday school children church teacher.

 

Janice Joined Elijah Chapter #129 OES of Long Island, NY June 14, 1998 she held various positions.

 

Janice joins in heaven her parents Abe and Helen Godwin and 3 of her sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, two daughters, one sister, three brothers, 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, her church family, very closed friends and family.
