Gloria Johnson Obituary

Obituary

Gloria Rovinia Johnson was born in Chatham, Virginia to Matthew and Lucille Clark on December 23, 1939. To this union there were 8 children born of which Gloria was the 2nd oldest. Gloria was a proud country girl that could fix just about anything. Growing up as a tobacco farmers daughter awarded her with these lifetime skills.

Gloria or as she is lovingly called by her family “Veena”, attended a 1 room school house named Union Hall Elementary/Middle School as a young girl and graduated Valedictorian in June 1953. She then attended Southside High School in Blairs, Virginia where she completed her studies and graduated in 1958. In January 1959, aspiring to be a school teacher, she continued her education at Bluefield College in Bluefield, West Virginia. However, she did not complete her college degree, before taking off for the bright lights of New York City to seek employment. While in New York, she met the love of her life Edward B. Johnson Sr. and married him on June 23, 1961. To this union 4 children were born.

Gloria lived her personal life as devoted wife and mother to her children. She was blessed to stay at home to raise her children up until the point that they each started school. At that time, she took on domestic work which she enjoyed and was adored by her employers. She was the type of mother who everyone could easily talk to and it was not uncommon to find school friends over at the house even when we were not there.

Her spouse, Edward B. Johnson Sr. and two of her daughter’s have preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters (one adopted) and a son, five grandchildren, two great grandsons, eight siblings (two preceded in death), and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was LOVED by all.
