Obituary
Samuel (Sammy) James Durant Sr. was born on July 28, 1928 in Hastings, Florida to the late Leola Durant-Burke. He was the first born of three children.
Samuel received his education at Hastings Vocational Training School, Hastings, FL. After school he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. On his return home he was joined in marriage to Ms. Migonette Fitzgerald. On April 13, 1948. Out of this union of seventy-one years was born five children.
Sammy worked as a baker over thirty years at Michele’s Bakery’s in Plainview, NY. He also worked as an Auxiliary Police Serving his Community for Wyandanch, NY. Upon his retirement from the bakery he was again serving his fellow Veterans by working at Northport, VA Hospital for about ten years.
He was a hard worker but was also a lover of quartet style singing. He managed a group called the Gospel Exciters. He was a lover of children and organized the neighborhood baseball team, and would setup bus trips in the summer to Coney Island. He was also known for his motor cycles and motor cycle wheelies.
In the 1990’s he joined Revelation C.O.G.I.C. under the late Bishop Johnny C. Bryant. On July 15, 2007 under the leadership of Bishop Ronald Allen Sr. he was ordained as Head Deacon and served faithfully with is fellow Deacons, along side their Pastor.
On Sunday, May 12, 2019 he was rushed to Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, GA. After a week in the hospital. It was decided to take him home.
He spent his last days at home among family. On May 27, 2019 at 5:48 p.m. the Lord took his soldier home. He was surrounded by his loved ones and had a
peaceful transition. He left an indelible mark on the lives of those that knew him. He was the epitome of a real man.
He leaves to celebrate his life and continue his legacy a loving wife Migonette A. Durant; four sons, one daughter,two sisters,one brother-in-law, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren and many friends.
